DEC Accreditation of a CPD Activity signifies that it's structure, design and mode of delivery is of the requisite standard to appropriately and effectively impart the knowledge, skills, professional attributes and competencies, in line with stated learning outcomes.  Furthermore, Accreditation of an Activity provides assurances that the subject matter is appropriate for dental practitioners, being within the definition of dentistry and the scope of dental practice.

The DEC Accreditation process is designed not to stifle intellectual curiosity and creativity, but rather to encourage progressive, and reflective ongoing personal and professional development.

Competency
includes knowledge, experience, critical thinking and problem- solving skills, professionalism, ethical values, diagnostic and technical and procedural skills. These components become an integrated whole during the delivery of patient care by the competent practitioner. Competency assumes that all behaviours are performed with a degree of quality consistent with patient well- being and that the practitioner self-evaluates treatment effectiveness.2 The term covers the complex combination of knowledge and understanding, skills and attitudes needed by the graduate. Competencies are outcomes of clinical training and experience.

Evidence-based dentistry
